Old neighborhoods, old trees

The tree work in Christiansburg splits pretty cleanly by neighborhood. Around Cambria and the older streets near downtown, the houses came first and the trees have had eighty years to get big. Silver maples over rooflines, oaks with limbs reaching across two properties, the occasional enormous poplar that nobody planted on purpose. Those are pruning and hazard-assessment calls more than removals — a big old tree in good shape is worth keeping, and worth having somebody look at every few years.

Out toward Falling Branch, Hans Meadow, and the newer subdivisions off Peppers Ferry, it's the opposite problem. Trees planted at the same time, ten to twenty years ago, all hitting the stage where they need structural pruning before a bad fork becomes a split trunk. Cheap to fix now. Expensive later.

Lawns here

Most of Christiansburg is fescue on clay. It holds water in the spring, sets up hard in a dry August, and does best cut a little tall. Newer subdivisions are often sitting on graded fill with a thin layer of topsoil, which is why so many of them have thin lawns that don't respond to seed. If that's your yard, the fix is usually compaction and drainage, not another bag of seed — and Trevor will tell you that rather than sell you another overseed that won't hold.

Storms

Summer thunderstorms come over the ridge and hit hard and fast. Most of the calls after one are the same: a limb down across a driveway, a split poplar, a yard full of debris. Ice is the other one, and ice takes different trees — the ones already carrying deadwood, and anything with a heavy horizontal limb.

Getting around town

Christiansburg is compact enough that Trevor can usually get to an estimate quickly, whether you're near the Huckleberry Trail, out by the mall off exit 118, or on the Riner side of town. Access is worth mentioning when you get in touch — a lot of the older streets have narrow driveways and tight back yards, and that changes how a tree has to come down.
